Arizona State has been a mainstay of NCAA and Pac-12 success. Beginning with Mona Plummer and Ron Johnson, the Sun Devils have compiled eight AIWA team titles, 172 All-Americans, and 55 national champions. The Sun Devils have also prevailed on the international level. Fifty-one Sun Devils have become Olympians including Gold Medalist Troy Dalbey and more have been members of United States National Teams.
Since its opening in 1981, the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center is regarded as one of the nation’s finest outdoor swimming and diving facilities. The aquatic center consists of three pools: an Olympic-sized 50-meter by 25 yard competition pool; a 25-yard, 18’ deep diving well; and 25-yard eight-lane warm-up pool. Other amenities include three platforms, four springboards, moveable bulkhead and team room. With seating for over 1,000 spectators, the facility was revitalized with a $1.2 million renovation in 2012.
Arizona State swimmers embody the term “student-athlete”. In the Spring of 2014 the women’s team posted a 3.37 GPA while the men’s team earned a 3.23. Among teams that qualified for the NCAA Championships, the Sun Devil women’s GPA ranked 16th while the men’s tied for 24th.
Sun Devil swimmers & divers are high achievers with big goals in and out of the pool and our Office of Student Athlete Development, led by Natalie Thackrath, helps them achieve those goals. If a student is falling behind or wants an edge in getting ahead, there are a wealth of opportunities available to them including free and unlimited tutoring, learning specialists, networking opportunities. In 2014, the Pac-12 Conference honored 15 swimmers on the All-Academic Team while the CSCAA recognized ten Sun Devils as Academic All-Americans.
The Pac-12 Conference is known as one of the toughest and most dominant conferences in Olympic sports. The Pac-12 rises above the rest, upholding its tradition as the “Conference of Champions” ®, claiming an incredible 121 NCAA team titles since 1999-2000, including nine in 2011-12. That is an average of over nine championships per academic year. Even more impressive has been the breadth of the Pac-12’s success, with championships coming in 28 different men’s and women’s sports. To show the conference’s strength, the Sun Devil women finished in sixth place at Pac-12 Championships in 2012 only to finish 12th nationally at the NCAA Championships.
Between the men’s and women’s swimming teams, Arizona State has garnered 92 individual Pac-12 champions and 145 national champions. This winning tradition continues as the Sun Devils consistently set new school records and improve in both conference and national competition.
